But the single most useful thing you can know in that moment is your own horse's baseline. Without that you have nothing to compare to. I created this service due to my own personal experience. I truly believe that knowing my horses baseline vitals saved his life. I now want all horse owners to acquire this basic skill. Our story: My thoroughbred runs an unusually low body temperature, around 36 to 36.4 degrees. One evening late after work, My boy ate all his feed - just very slowly (which is not typical for him). He was a little quiet but there were droppings in his stable, the bed had the usual wet patches and his hay net was all most empty. When I took his temperature it read 37.7, which any vet would call normal for a horse. but for him, that was a high fever fever. I called the vet on exactly that information. Within the hour he was down, sweating, unable to hold his head up, with suspected peritonitis. Had I not taken his temperature that night it would've been another 12hrs befor he was checked again and the outcome would have been very different.
