The mare's equivalent, and just like the sheath clean, a health check first. Gentle, dignified care for an area that's easy to overlook and important to keep healthy.
A gentle clean of the udders, teats, vulva and dock using warm water and a pH-appropriate, water-based lubricant. I bring hot water. Mares carry a surprising amount of waxy build-up between the teats and around the udder, and most are visibly happier once it's done. As with the sheath clean, the clean matters, but the trained health check that comes with it matters more.

A HEALTH CHECK, NOT JUST A CLEAN
The udder area collects a waxy, sometimes smelly build-up that can irritate the skin and hide small lumps or changes. Around the dock and vulva, gentle regular checking keeps your mare comfortable and gives you an early warning if anything looks different. The same principle applies as with sheath cleaning: many changes here are subtle, and it takes an experienced eye and feel to tell normal from not. It's easy to assume a mare who looks clean is fine, but it's often the things you can't see that matter. If I find anything worth noting, I will always advise you to speak to your vet. This supports comfort, hygiene and early detection. It does not replace veterinary examination where disease is suspected.
HOW OFTEN AND FROM WHAT AGE?
From the age of five, every mare benefits from an annual hygiene check, and some appreciate it twice a year for comfort. However clean your mare looks, an annual check by a vet or an insured BEHA hygienist is the safest approach. Always make sure whoever you use is properly insured.
GOOD TO KNOW
Every mare is handled calmly and with patience, especially those who don't love being touched there. I'm very experienced and confident, even with the most difficult horses I allow longer per treatment than most hygienists. Where others rush through in ten minutes, I set aside around 25 minutes, so no mare is ever rushed and there's always contingency time if yours needs more patient handling.
